Love Skirts! What’s your best style?

Skirts are not just for Summer!

If you think Autumn and Winter are all about trousers then think again; the skirt is THE separate for the season and you will be spoiled for choice. Looks are ladylike and feminine, hemlines are lower (going down to floor length) and fabrics range from leather to lace, so make sure you find your most flattering styles to see you through the season.

The Full Skirt

The biggest look for skirts is full and feminine with a strong reference to 50’s styling. These skirts are designed to accentuate the female silhouette – in at the waist and curvy on the bottom. If you want to be ladylike and elegant then this look is for you.

The full skirt is not the easiest shape to wear. Petites and rounder figures will struggle to carry this off as there is too much volume for small frames and it will add bulk to a round middle.

The A-line Skirt

The A-line skirt is the more wearable alternative to the full skirt. It accentuates the female shape in a more simple cut and with less material. It can be a practical piece for daywear but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring; try it in different fabrics and colours to create different looks.

This style does add width to the hips so it’s not a good one for triangle shapes but is ideal for the inverted triangle as it balances out their figure.

The Pencil Skirt

The pencil skirt is not always the most practical for every day wear when you’re climbing into a car or on to a train perhaps, but it does look fabulously chic! The leather pencil skirt is hugely popular right now and easiest to wear in black or tan but don’t be afraid to try some in colours if the look suits you. It’s a useful skirt to take from smart daytime to elegant evening wear with a quick change of heels.

Fuller figures will find this one too restricitve although if it’s in a softer material it will have more give. It looks best on those with a well-defined waist, so hourglasses ideally. It is worth getting a good quality one to get the right fit.

The Maxi Skirt

The maxi skirt took over the summer and has moved into winter. It may not be the obvious choice for some of us of a certain age, but the right styles can look feminine and rather classy. Muted floral chiffon gives it a bohemian look but classic jersey or cotton in neutral colours keep it looking sleek and smart.

The maxi is better on medium and taller figures. How you wear it is key; if you are lean then you can do layering, if you are a triangle go for one with some flare on the bottom to balance out the hip area. Curvy body shapes should keep the fabric fluid.
