How to wear accessories – Part 2 ‘Gloves’

BRRR!  It’s getting chilly out there!  Winter is here and now’s the time when we all start thinking about keeping warm and investing in a new pair of gloves.

Our mothers and grandmothers probably wore their little white gloves all year round.  Indeed there was a time that a lady would not leave the house without a cute pair of gloves and an appropriate hat.  But things have changed, and we’re far more relaxed about dress codes these days, so wearing gloves has become more a matter of keeping warm than of dressing with style.

But this season, on the catwalks the simple glove made a huge comeback with many designers incorporating them as part of the season’s key trends.  They can certainly add a great deal of sophistication and glamour to just about any outfit.

Gloves are such an easy an inexpensive way of accessorising, so what are your options?    What is fashionable this winter?

For this season’s elegant looks, you should start by investing in a good pair of leather or suede gloves.

It’s a no brainer really!  Leather gloves are always the most stylish option and will never date.  They are the best choice for ‘Classic’ and ‘City Chic’ personality types who like to invest in good quality items that will last and will still be appropriate in ten years time.

But why choose a black or brown pair when there are so many fabulous colours out there? Don’t be afraid to try a colour!  Deep reds and burgundies, purple, navy or forest green are perfect for winter.  And adding a splash of colour with a pair of gloves and colourful scarf is an easy way to brighten up a dark winter coat.

Suede gloves are also very stylish and there are also many colours to choose from.  They are not as practical as leather but can feel very soft and look really beautiful.

Top tip: If you have quite large hands then get the very soft leather or suede as they are much easier to get on and off.

Fabulous long gloves by Elegance

When wearing your cloak or a coat with three quarter length sleeves, choose this season’s key trend ‘the long glove’.  These are far more stylish with these shorter sleeve lengths, and very practical too; brilliant at keeping out the cold!

With a simple dress, elbow-length gloves look exceptionally elegant.  Why not try a pair of velvet gloves?  They are very chic and sexy and ideal for all occasions. ‘ Romantic’ types will love the feel of these.

For the evening, a gorgeous pair of opera length gloves will look fabulous with your cocktail dress with short or no sleeves.   Long satin gloves, although not featured a great deal  on the catwalks, would certainly add a touch of glamour to your evening gowns.  However, it’s best to stick with either black or white.  And although it would not be considered proper ‘glove etiquette’, wearing your rings and jewellery over your gloves can be great fun!

For the party season younger girls can wear tea-length (to the wrist) with their dresses.  Or try a cute pair of lace gloves.  These can look particularly good when worn peeking out from under long floaty sleeves.  ‘Romantic’ and ‘Creative’ personalities might like to embellish their gloves by adding a pretty brooch or some lace or beading so that they match your outfit perfectly.

For ‘Natural’ types, a comfy and cosy pair of wool gloves would be perfect for wearing outdoors.  This season they could adopt the ‘ski set’ look with some fairisle mittens.
